In addition to CO2, other emissions are produced by the combustion of fossil fuels during the industrial processes involved in energy production. Depending on their concentration, nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other particles can have a serious impact on the environment and human health.
A new directive
These emissions are subject to the European Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), which led to the creation of national laws by EU countries in 2012. The directive is now a benchmark document in matters of industrial pollution.
Best available practices
The IED relates to ENGIE facilities and the facilities of the Group’s industrial customers. These facilities are now required to implement all best available practices for power production and incineration sites in order to limit emissions as much as possible.
Analysis of Indoor Air Quality
Analysis of a facility to assess its Interior Air Quality (IAQ) or the equipment used to treat indoor air: Jointly developed by Cofely Services and the ENGIE Cylergie Research Center, the IAQ analysis service provides an assessment of a facility’s Indoor Air Quality or its indoor air treatment equipment. IAQ analysis is a structured process that takes place in four steps: the operator or its customer identifies and describes the problem; comprehensive air analysis (measurement of air changes per hour, humidity measurements, etc.) is performed; air-quality analysis is performed by measuring the average amounts of particle, chemical and microbiological pollutants using a method adapted to the specific concerns of each site (automated measurements, innovative measurement systems, etc.). During the final step, COFELY Services may suggest concrete solutions for improving IAQ based on its expertise in facility management. The organization of the analysis into four stages helps gradually implement the resources needed for a site’s specific problem, which optimizes the cost of the operation without sacrificing its effectiveness.
ENGIE is continuing its research on the flameless combustion of combustible gases, a process that reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Already used in industrial furnaces, this technology may be adapted to natural gas-fired boilers at thermal power plants.
The 2013 Green Week will be devoted to air quality. Green Week, the largest conference on European environmental policy, will take place in Brussels from June 4-7. The event pursues the European Commission’s intention to strengthen its air policy by promoting new solutions to improve air quality. Notably offering an opportunity to share best practices, the debates will bring together government officials, NGOs, scientists and industrial companies, including ENGIE.
