Maximizing Energy Efficiency
The Group strives to enhance energy efficiency by providing high-performance solutions in the various energy production and consumption sectors.
The Maxima plant at Lelystad (Netherlands)
The plant consists of two ultra-modern gas turbine units, each with a capacity of 435 MW. Capable of producing enough electricity to power some 1.6 million homes, both units are of the latest generation and offer a very high yield approaching 60%, all while having a very limited impact on the environment.
The Heron II plant (Greece)
Commissioned in December 2010, Heron II is a combined cycle gas plant owned jointly by GDF SUEZ and GEK TERNA. In its class, it is currently the most modern and the most-efficient in the country, with a yield of 58% versus the national average of 54%.
Energy performance in Alsace schools
Partnering with the Caisse des Dépôts and the Fonds d’Investissement et de Développement des Partenariats Publics Privés – Fidepp (a fund for investment and development in public-private partnerships), Cofely is responsible for the energy efficiency of 14 schools in the Alsace region. The project includes reducing the buildings’ energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The 20-year contract should see the energy consumption of the buildings, which have a total area of 300,000 m2 reduced by 35% and their greenhouse gas emissions by 65%. It includes constructing six biomass boilers, optimizing the heating and ventilation systems, installing 5,000 m2 of photovoltaic panels, insulating the buildings and replacing wood trim.
The Manifesto: a commitment to progress published annually
In late 2009, GDF SUEZ signed the “Commitment to Action Manifesto” on the energy efficiency of its service buildings as part of its activities in the World Business Council for Sustainable Development – WBCSD. Since then, the Property Department has taken actions which will soon be published in the Group’s Green Buildings Policy, which will apply to the 2010-2020 period for service buildings occupied by the Group. In 2010, a survey of the buildings (between four and five million square meters around the world) was carried out as well as energy audits on 420,000 m2 of floorspace – covering approximately 60% of the buildings owned by the Group in France.
The Green IT Program
In 2007, IT accounted for 2% of global CO2 emissions (Gartner).
GDF SUEZ is incorporating the Green IT program to its sustainable development policy. This program : “Do IT Green!” presents two objectives:
- mitigating the impacts of information and communication technologies (ICT or IT) on the environment by promoting practices more energy efficient (reduction of energy consumption of desktop and data center, rational use of prints, waste recycling, etc.)
- adapting IT to the demands of the business and sustainable development by proposing solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of other sectors through innovative technologies (visio-conference, dematerialization, smart metering / smart grid, logistics optimization, etc. ).
Program initiatives are now structured around four themes: energy efficiency (to reduce the power consumption of IT and the greenhouse gas emissions associated), recycling, @work (to adopt smart behaviors at workplace) and green business (developing innovative products to reduce the impact of our clients activity).
With “Do IT Green!”, GDF SUEZ aims at reducing its environmental footprint. In order to support actions to optimize IT solutions, a campaign was conducted among all employees. Their contribution, especially through a rational use of IT solutions, is one of the necessary condition for reaching a high level of success for this program.
Consequently, the “Do IT Green!” program allows GDF SUEZ capitalizing on its good practices in order to set up further relevant actions and move from a logic of local initiatives to a comprehensive approach involving each entity of the Group.
In order to know the carbon footprint of the IT sector and measure the progress of actions undertaken throughout the deployment of the Green IT program, a study was carried out in 2010 using the methodology Bilan Carbone® ADEME.
