At the personal initiative of General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, fifteen months before the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention to be held in Paris in December 2015(COP21), the summit aimed to mobilise international players towards an ambitious global climate agreement, in order to limit the rise in global temperatures to less than 2°C.

Outside the summit, and in many cities across the globe, more than 300,000 people took to the streets, along with NGOs, calling on political leaders to take action.

The day was also an opportunity for participants, including GDF SUEZ, to exchange views on concrete actions to reduce emissions and improve adaption to the impact of climate change. Gérard Mestrallet attended a meeting of CEOs held by the Global Compact, the “Finance” session, and a Private Sector Forum luncheon. GDF SUEZ took the opportunity to advocate the principle of a world price for carbon, in support for the World Bank’s statement “Putting a Price on Carbon”.

In the run-up to COP21, the UN climate change conference to be held in Paris in December 2015, GDF SUEZ as a founder partner also committed itself to the Solutions COP21 initiative, being driven by Committee 21 and Club France Développement Durable. Solutions COP21 is a unique approach to harnessing climate change initiatives and solutions supported by all types of players in the private and public sectors.

Conscious of the impact of its industrial activities, GDF SUEZ is contributing to efforts to combat climate change by developing renewable energies and optimising energy efficiency at its production facilities, while actively participating in international initiatives in the area.

“Decade of Sustainable Energy for All”

The Decade of Sustainable Energy for All – SE4AII (2014-2024) – was officially launched by the United Nations in June 2014. This worldwide initiative aims to raise awareness of energy poverty among the main global players, with three targets set for 2030: 1) provide universal access to modern energy services; 2) double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; 3) double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. GDF SUEZ is supporting this sustainable energy for all campaign via initiatives aimed at facilitating access to energy.
