Hydrogen – speeding up the transition towards carbon neutrality

Green hydrogen, which is mainly produced by water electrolysis using renewable electricity, is one of the levers that will speed up the transition to a carbon neutral future: development of green mobility, decarbonisation of large-scale industrial uses of hydrogen (fertilisers, refineries, chemicals, etc.), improved integration of intermittent renewable energies into the energy system, massive storage of the surplus electricity generated.

Usable in addition to all green energies to satisfy and decarbonise many uses, hydrogen can become the pillar of 100% renewable regions.

Renewable hydrogen solutions across the entire value chain

ENGIE has positioned itself as a major player in renewable hydrogen and operates along the entire length of the hydrogen value chain – from production of renewable energies to end uses:

Green hydrogen – an essential component of the energy mix:

  • store energy and make it available when renewables are not producing electricity
  • develop more sustainable forms of mobility
  • decarbonise industrial uses

From research to marketing, we are involved in production through to end uses: strategy, design, engineering, building low-energy assets, digital platforms, operation, funding and performance obligation.

Renewable hydrogen produced on a large scale:

ENGIE's aim is to be a leader in the production of renewable hydrogen on a large scale.
We are working in three main development areas: industrial uses, mobility and hydrogen as an energy vector, for which we are developing solutions, entering into partnerships and exploring various innovative technologies.

We combine the expertise of all of our teams both internationally and in France, including ENGIE Lab CRIGEN, ENGIE Impact, Tractebel, Storengy, ENGIE Solutions, ENGIE Green, GNVERT and ENGIE H2 to develop a wide range of solutions on an industrial scale. Our local roots are a major asset to bring various economic and institutional stakeholders together to work on developing projects across the regions.

Taking action with regions

In France, ENGIE plays an active role in the ADEME's regional calls for projects: we implement solutions alongside our clients throughout the regions. We bring together stakeholders in hydrogen ecosystems to speed up the development of uses of hydrogen.
ENGIE takes action by creating production and distribution networks, and by increasing numbers of uses among its partners, local authorities and companies: heavy mobility, such as bus fleets, and intensive mobility, such as utilities vehicles and saloon cars.

Our flagship projects:

  • HyGREEN Provence produces, stores and distributes renewable hydrogen at salt cavity storage sites at industrial scale via local renewable electricity production. The aim is ultimately to supply green mobility stations.
  • In Auvergne and in the Rhône-Alpes region, we are working with Zero Emission Valley (ZEV) on building 20 hydrogen stations in a highly polluted valley by 2030.
  • In the Netherlands, Coradia iLint is the world's first renewable hydrogen passenger train. ENGIE supplies and operates the mobile renewable hydrogen refuelling station for the train, the first trials of which were conducted in March 2020.
