green energy at a fixed price?<\/p>\n<p>The growth of the biomethane industry in Europe has led to an increase in BPAs, or Biomethane Purchase Agreements. These innovative contracts allow industries to secure their supply of renewable, local energy.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a BPA?<\/h2>\n<p>A Biomethane Purchase Agreement (BPA) is a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>contract between a biomethane producer and a customer<\/strong>, which defines the terms for purchasing biomethane over several years. No investment is required on the customer\u2019s part, as biomethane has the same composition as natural gas and is transported through existing networks. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80%.<\/p>\n<h2>ENGIE&#8217;s expertise at your service<\/h2>\n<p>As France\u2019s leading biomethane supplier to businesses, and one of the leaders in Europe, ENGIE leverages the expertise of its GEMS entity\u2014Global Energy Management &amp; Sales\u2014which acts as the intermediary between its production activities and its clients. GEMS is the leading intermediary (or \u2018midstreamer\u2019) for biomethane in France.<\/p>\n<h2>Arkema: A Pioneer Client<\/h2>\n<p>In 2023,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsroom.engie.com\/news\/engie-signs-major-biomethane-supply-agreement-with-arkema-to-further-reduce-the-carbon-footprint-of-its-bio-based-polyamide-11-materials-0d2a-314df.html\">the chemical group Arkema signed a BPA with ENGIE<\/a>, agreeing to receive<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>300 gigawatt hours (GWh) of biomethane annually for ten years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s equivalent to the gas consumed annually by 25,000 French households.<\/p>\n<h2>News<\/h2>\n<p>In July 2024,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/en\/explore\/news\/basf-and-engie-signed-a-long-term-biomethane-purchase-agreement-in-europe\/\">BASF and ENGIE signed a BPA<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for the supply of 2.7 to 3 terawatt hours of biomethane over seven years. The biomethane will serve as a sustainable alternative to fossil raw materials in the chemical production process, helping reduce BASF\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2024,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Waga Energy and Veolia<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>announced a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/waga-energy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CP_2024-05-28_BiomethanePurchaseAgreement_FR.pdf\">13-year BPA<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>with ENGIE for their Claye-Souilly site.
