Yes, because it can be used as a fuel for heavy-duty vehicles, an energy source for generating &#8220;hydrogen electricity&#8221; to power production processes, and a raw material for making explosives. It has caught the interest of the mining industry for all these reasons, and ENGIE is strategically placed to advise and support industry players. Which isn&#8217;t surprising when you consider that a single truck consumes 3,000 litres of diesel a day, and that there are almost 50,000 of them operating worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>But the appeal of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/en\/our-activities\/renewables-and-flex-power\/green-gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green hydrogen<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for mining companies goes beyond the promise of carbon-free mobility. In fact,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Koen Langie, Senior Hydrogen Developer and Head of Mining Program at ENGIE<\/strong>, believes &#8220;<em>it will boost productivity in the sector because hydrogen fuel cell technology is more reliable than that of combustion engines for intensive, 24\/7 use.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-engie-gradient title-6\">An energy source and a raw material: multi-use hydrogen<\/h2>\n<p>Hydrogen&#8217;s impact is potentially much greater.<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.engie.com\/en\/articles\/detail\/hydrogene-souterrain-stockage-sel-cavites-mines\/25906\/12\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stored locally<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and used as and when it is needed, this gas opens up the realm of possibility: electricity made from it can be used to power mineral-based production processes, generate high-quality heat, etc. And, as a raw material, green hydrogen can help to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tractebel-engie.fr\/fr\/references\/green-ammonia-production-hyex-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make &#8220;decarbonised&#8221; explosives<\/a>, which can then be used in mining operations.<\/p>\n<p>So, hydrogen can help to improve mining sites&#8217; energy autonomy. Producing hydrogen on or close to mines is therefore a key determining factor for an industry that often operates in remote places, in countries with good access to renewable energy, such as solar power in Chile, China, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, etc.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-engie-gradient title-6\">The pilot project phase<\/h2>\n<p>The big mining companies and other players in the value chain are currently running pilot projects all over the world. \u00a0Our Group acts as a catalyst by driving these new solutions on to the market.<\/p>\n<p>Practically speaking, this means designing the right hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen tanks for heavy-duty vehicles. \u00a0Another important factor is the introduction of efficient green hydrogen supply networks, to make production costs competitive in comparison with fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Koen Langie expects a hydrogen-powered mining haul truck to be rolled out sometime this decade: &#8220;<em>The main challenge lies in getting the technology integrated in the vehicle, ensuring manufacturers adapt their platforms to take on this new type of engine and, ultimately, deliver mining haul trucks with built-in hydrogen fuel cells. A testing and validation programme will be conducted at Anglo American&#8217;s Mogalakwena Platinum Group Metals in South Africa, before rollout to the company&#8217;s other mines.<\/p>\n                  <\/div>\n                              <\/details>\n                          <details class=\"nj-accordion-item !bg-transparent\">\n                                  <summary> \n                    <span class=\"nj-accordion-item__label nj-heading--xs\" data-trad>\n                      2. A mining haul train in Chile                    <\/span>\n                    <span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"material-icons nj-icon-material nj-accordion-item__toggle\">expand_more<\/span>\n                  <\/summary>\n                                                  <div class=\"nj-accordion-item__content wysiwyg force-dark\" data-trad data-trad-html>\n                    <p>In Chile, we are running the Hydra project in a consortium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining3.com\/hydra-consortium-confirmed-mining-and-technology-leaders-join-forces-in-hydra-consortium-to-drive-decarbonisation-in-mining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with the Australian company Mining3<\/a>, Mitsui &amp; Co Inc, Thiess, Ballard Power Systems, Hexagon Purus, Reborn Electric Motors, and with the financial support of the Chilean Economic Development Agency. We are co-developing the prototype of a mining haul train powered by 100-200kW hydrogen fuel cells, to completely replace diesel. The aim is to test the prototype in situ, in particular conditions &#8211; high altitude &#8211; to assess its performance. Launched in 2021, the project will play a decisive role in setting international standards for hydrogen use in mining trains.<\/p>\n                  <\/div>\n                              <\/details>\n                          <details class=\"nj-accordion-item !bg-transparent\">\n                                  <summary> \n                    <span class=\"nj-accordion-item__label nj-heading--xs\" data-trad>\n                      3. Green hydrogen fuels with Liebherr                    <\/span>\n                    <span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"material-icons nj-icon-material nj-accordion-item__toggle\">expand_more<\/span>\n                  <\/summary>\n                                                  <div class=\"nj-accordion-item__content wysiwyg force-dark\" data-trad data-trad-html>\n                    <p>In September 2021, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebherr.com\/en\/int\/latest-news\/news-press-releases\/detail\/liebherr-and-engie-partner-to-offer-carbon-neutral-solutions-for-the-mining-industry.html?news.type=news&amp;news.type=press&amp;news.category=ME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined forces with Liebherr<\/a>. By combining our expertise with that of one of the world&#8217;s largest construction and mining equipment manufacturers, we will be assessing hydrogen and hydrogen-derived fuels to decarbonise mining equipment. The aim is to offer carbon-neutral hydrogen solutions for the entire logistics chain.<\/p>\n                  <\/div>\n                              <\/details>\n                          <details class=\"nj-accordion-item !bg-transparent\">\n                                  <summary> \n                    <span class=\"nj-accordion-item__label nj-heading--xs\" data-trad>\n                      4. Using hydrogen to make green ammonia                    <\/span>\n                    <span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"material-icons nj-icon-material nj-accordion-item__toggle\">expand_more<\/span>\n                  <\/summary>\n                                                  <div class=\"nj-accordion-item__content wysiwyg force-dark\" data-trad data-trad-html>\n                    <p>Mobility is not the mining industry&#8217;s only application for hydrogen. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/03\/CP-chili-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HyEX project<\/a>, also in Chile and run in conjunction with the manufacturer Enaex, is <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.engie.com\/en\/articles\/detail\/ammoniac-vert-chainon-manquant-decarbonation\/24429\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making ammonium nitrates<\/a> &#8211;
