 <p>Due to the nature of its industrial processes, ENGIE pays particular attention to water management in its energy production and wastewater treatment processes. Since water is an essential resource for life, the availability and quality of water resources are two key priorities for the planet. The droughts of recent years have only reinforced the need for action. ENGIE works on these issues by implementing operational measures and by lending ideas to international discussions on this issue including the United Nations CEO Water Mandate and the OECD Water Governance Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The oceans, key elements in carbon capture, are also threatened by human activity. ENGIE&#8217;s activities interact with this resource directly, through the cooling of power plants or the heating of liquefied gas, desalination, offshore wind power, or through hydraulic structures on rivers, and indirectly via greenhouse gas emissions, atmospheric discharges or waste produced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n            <\/div>\n            \n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_5a030fc093a2a99682aaf0d03a581c21\" class=\"cp-wysiwyg teq-container nj-aura nj-aura--white\">\n    <div class=\"teq-grid \">\n        <div class=\"col-span-6 xl:col-start-2 xl:col-span-10 lg:col-start-1 lg:col-span-12 \">\n                        <div class=\"teq-wysiwyg\">\n                <div data-trad data-trad-html><h2>The commitments of the Group<\/h2>\n<p>The Group updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ENGIE-Water-and-Oceans-Policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water and oceans policy<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the core elements of the CEO Water Mandate, the main issues are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying sites located in water stress zones, and develop action plans to help reduce pressure on water resources<\/li>\n<li>Analyzing water-related risks and opportunities in projects<\/li>\n<li>Contributing to the improvement of water management and governance in the territories and working with stakeholders<\/li>\n<li>Implementing available technologies to reduce the impact of discharges into the natural environment<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the improvement of marine ecosystems in the Group\u2019s areas of activity<\/li>\n<li>Identifying suppliers with a water issue, based in particular on the work carried out on the water footprint, and encourage them to develop action plans<\/li>\n<li>Integrating sustainable water management into customer services<\/li>\n<li>Acting for access to water, sanitation and hygiene in the workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ENGIE-Water-and-Oceans-Policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the water and oceans policy<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ENGIE has included water matters in its commitments to 2030<\/strong> with the ambition to reduce its consumption of fresh water per energy produced to 0.1 m3\/MWh by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the Group made a public commitment to the oceans through the &#8220;UN Ocean principles&#8221;, and in 2023 signed the &#8220;Business Leaders&#8217; Open Call to Accelerate Water Action&#8221; launched at the UN Water Conference to demonstrate the mobilization of players around the subject of water.<\/p>\n<h2>A continuous impact and risk management process<\/h2>\n<p>Impacts and risks associated with water and marine resources are regularly assessed in order to identify avoidance, reduction and\/or compensation measures.<br \/>\nAt the beginning and end of a project&#8217;s lifecycle, issues are assessed using 10 ESG criteria, including water (quantity and quality) and oceans.<br \/>\nDuring the operational phase, an annual risk analysis is carried out on current and future issues (adaptation to climate change) concerning water stress and the potential impact on marine ecosystems.<br \/>\nOn the basis of these analyses, the entities implement action plans in consultation with the stakeholders concerned. These action plans are analyzed annually, with a target of 100% deployment by 2030.<\/p>\n<h2>Taking action at the source<\/h2>\n<p>ENGIE undertakes several actions to improve water management by limiting water withdrawal and consumption, privileging wastewater-recycling solutions and limiting the environmental impact of water discharge. Its technological and environmental performance will strengthen the grid in the Pays de la Loire region. Its proximity to the LNG terminal will reduce the plant&#8217;s environmental impact: the water heated by the plant can be used by the LNG terminal to regasify liquefied natural gas, thus conserving water without impacting the ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h2>Mitigating water stress impact<\/h2>\n<p>This commitment has notably led to programs focused on the improvement of ENGIE\u2019s water footprint assessment (through the identification of facilities located in areas of water stress) and the implementation of action plans to reduce the impact of ENGIE activities on local water resources.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, ENGIE assesses the risk of water stress to which the Group&#8217;s industrial sites are exposed, using the Baseline water stress index of the Aqueduct tool (World Resource Institute). In 2025, 175 sites are located in extreme water stress zones and 114 in high water stress zones. Among the sites in extreme water stress zones, seven have significant freshwater requirements (freshwater consumption in excess of 100,000 m3\/year).<\/p>\n<p>For these sites, action plans have been finalized or are currently being rolled out. The water is sent through an aqueduct 140 km long, from Mejillones to the mining site. Meetings are held with local authorities to promote the use of sea water used by the cooling system of the plant.<\/p>\n<h2>Supporting local communities in resource management<\/h2>\n<p>As an economic player, ENGIE is committed to working alongside other players in watersheds to preserve water resources.<\/p>\n<h3>Brazil &#8211; Preservation of water sources<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com.br\/en\/corporate-social-responsibility-cases\/wellsprings-preservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wellsprings Preservation program<\/a>\u00a0began in 2010 in the municipality of Chopinzinho, in southwestern Paran\u00e1, and has been replicated in several regions where ENGIE Brazil operates. The aim of the project is to protect watersheds, guarantee the supply of quality water to current and future generations of local communities, and create a culture of water resource preservation in the areas where ENGIE Brasil operates, relying on raising awareness among the population and involving them in preservation actions. The project is implemented through partnerships between ENGIE, social entities and local communities, thanks to over 800,000 Brazilian reals invested, and enables the preservation of over 2,000 water sources, impacting over 1,500 families.<\/p>\n<h2>Contributing to ocean preservation<\/h2>\n<p>The development of ENGIE&#8217;s activities as part of the energy transition reinforces the Group&#8217;s interest in contributing to the preservation of the oceans, notably through offshore wind energy and its natural link with the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the importance of preserving marine environments when discharging waste into sea water (thermal power plants, desalination plants), the Group, alongside EDPR via its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceanwinds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Winds<\/a> subsidiary, is becoming a key player in the preservation of coastal areas.<\/p>\n<p>ENGIE is also committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/newenergies-coalition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supporting maritime transport stakeholders in their decarbonization efforts<\/a>, thereby reducing their impact on the oceans.<\/p>\n<h3>Offshore wind farm development projects designed to respect ecosystems<\/h3>\n<p>ENGIE&#8217;s offshore wind farm development projects are designed to respect local ecosystems.<br \/>\nFor the installation of floating wind turbines in the <a href=\"https:\/\/info-efgl.fr\/lenvironnement\/le-parc-naturel-marin-du-golfe-du-lion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parc naturel marin du golfe du Lion<\/a>, measures have been put in place to respect ecosystems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>making the Marine Natural Park a mandatory contact for successful project developers,<\/li>\n<li>act in full compliance with the &#8220;Avoid, Reduce, Compensate&#8221; doctrine,<\/li>\n<li>ensure the socio-economic development of the project,<\/li>\n<li>encourage the maintenance of landscape quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Park&#8217;s Management Board has issued a favorable opinion on the environmental impacts and uses associated with the floating offshore wind farm pilot project, attesting to the project&#8217;s sound environmental integration into its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>The floating wind turbine project in the Gulf of Lion (France) represents a major advancement for the floating wind turbine sector by incorporating Biohuts\u00ae, artificial habitats filled with natural substrates designed to promote marine biodiversity. Different species of birds and marine mammals are present at different times of the year in and around the wind farm areas, which can create a variety of potential effects (collision, barrier, loss of habitat, sensitivity of animals to noise) and impact the projects, particularly in terms of their location, construction and operation. Avoidance, reduction and compensation measures are in place to reduce the potential impact of the wind farms on birdlife, notably through digital acoustic and aerial monitoring.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-engie-gradient title-4\">Performance<\/h2>\n<p>In 2025, ENGIE was awarded an A- for its water-related commitments by the rating agency CDP.\u00a0This is the result of years of improvement in the water management within ENGIE\u2019s activities, and confirms the good performance of the Group on environmental issues. The CDP\u2019s water program motivates companies to disclose and reduce their environmental impacts by using the power of investors and customers. The data CDP collects helps influential decision makers to reduce risk, capitalize on opportunities and drive action towards a more sustainable world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ENGIE_responses_to_2025_CDP_corporate_questionnaire.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consult ENGIE\u2019s responses to CDP\u2019s 2025 corporate questionnaire<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 2030 water consumption reduction target and the progress so far are presented in the \u201cESG @ ENGIE\u201d document, which can be accessed from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/en\/our-commitments\/esg-performance\/esg-publications\/\">ESG Publications<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>Water footprints are an essential starting point for analyzing the impact of activities on water resources. Several water footprint assessment methods are currently available. ENGIE has chosen the assessment method best suited to the energy business. In 2012, the first step was to carry out a Life Cycle Assessment of each kWh of electricity. The water footprint of the natural gas chain was also assessed in 2015-2016.<\/p>\n<h2>External partnerships and commitments<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Since 2007,<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ceowatermandate.org\/posts\/insights-mumbai-cdps-2017-water-forum-global-water-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Group has served as a member of the CEO Water Mandate<\/a><span>, an initiative launched in the framework of the United Nations Global Compact to bring together companies on the issue of improving water quality.
