 <p>How does the circular economy unite a territory&#8217;s energies?<\/p>\n<p>The Terres de Montaigu community of communes\u2019 biomethane production unit in the Vend\u00e9e region of western France was set up following close consultation between the local authority and its stakeholders. Each year, the facility recycles some 30,000 tonnes of substrates produced by local farms and food production sites. It is combined with a photovoltaic power plant, which supplies some of the site&#8217;s power needs in the form of self-consumed renewable electricity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n            <\/div>\n            \n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_f78894f5a16c776e1cabfea94c1059bf\" class=\"cp-wysiwyg teq-container nj-aura nj-aura--white\">\n    <div class=\"teq-grid \">\n        <div class=\"col-span-6 xl:col-start-2 xl:col-span-10 lg:col-start-1 lg:col-span-12 \">\n                        <div class=\"teq-wysiwyg\">\n                <div data-trad data-trad-html><h2>ENGIE&#8217;s solution: circular economy and energy autonomy<\/h2>\n<p>To meet the challenges associated with the transition to carbon neutrality for territories, ENGIE is developing local renewable gas production units. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/en\/explore\/explainer\/methanization-the-complete-guide-to-understanding-it\/\">biomethane<\/a> plant in Montaigu, in the Vend\u00e9e region of western France, has been up and running since 2019. It processes 30,000 t\/year of organic matter from 20 partner farms in the project, agrifoods-food production sites and local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>By methanizing these substrates, the biogas plant is able to inject 2.2 million cubic metres of biomethane into the gas distribution network every year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 1,800 gas-heated households.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits for the community are numerous. The digestate produced (residues from the methanization of organic waste) is recovered and spread on farmland, replacing chemical and fossil-derived fertilisers. The installation of pipelines transporting the manure and part of the digestate limits greenhouse gas emissions related to transport. And to improve the energy efficiency of the biomethane unit, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.com\/en\/explore\/explainer\/5-fun-facts-about-solar-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photovoltaic<\/a> plant has been installed on its buildings. The electricity produced is therefore directly self-consumed, accounting for 20% of the site&#8217;s power needs.<\/p>\n<p>This global project helps develop renewable energies, drawing on the local circular economy. Supported by Ademe (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency) and the Pays de la Loire water authority, it is one of 80 projects being developed by ENGIE with the aim of producing a volume of 5 TWh\/year of biomethane by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>This new facility in Terres de Montaigu, involving local farmers, is a fine example of technological innovation for the benefit of
