ENGIE Switzerland is building a biomass-fired power plant in Sisslerfeld which will supply three industrial clients (DSM, Novartis and Syngenta) with steam and provide roughly 17,500 households with electricity by the end of 2018. It will be the first time that ENGIE Switzerland has played a supporting role for industrial operators migrating from a fossil-fired thermal plant to a biomass-fired plant producing heat and electricity.
In Brütten, in the canton of Zurich, ENGIE Switzerland has taken part in the construction of a 100% energy self-sufficient apartment building, a world first. With no connection to the electricity and gas networks, the nine-apartment building, which has been inhabited since the summer of 2016, uses the sun as its sole source of energy. The roof is covered with photovoltaic panels, while solar cells are positioned discreetly on the facades. Excess electricity is stored for the short term in batteries and for the long term in the form of hydrogen, using the Power-to-Gas technology.
Another example of ENGIE Switzerland’s environmental commitment is the Umwelt Arena in Spreitenbach, of which ENGIE Switzerland is partner and which is completely carbon neutral. ENGIE is the sole entry point for all aspects building technology. Its heating and air-conditioning systems are powered by renewable energies.
