The opportunity:
The Global Energy Management & Sales (GEMS) business unit is the fully integrated trading arm of the ENGIE Group. GEMS teams manage a large and highly diversified energy portfolio and provide a range of trading risk management solutions to all types of market participants in Europe, Asia Pacific and in the Americas.
In this newly created role, you will be the sole legal counsel within the GEMS ANZ business unit reporting to the Chief Operating Officer for GEMS ANZ.
You will support the commercial success of the GEMS ANZ business by providing strategic legal input into all aspects of its business activities and projects and delivering timely, sound and pragmatic advice on legal and compliance matters.
The position will suit an experienced legal professional, who will thrive in a commercial environment, supporting a growth agenda as a trusted partner to senior leadership whilst developing sustainable relationships with key external stakeholders and business partners of GEMS ANZ.
The main areas of focus for the role include supporting the development of:
- New business and related infrastructure
- Green products, including carbon offsets, ACCUs, renewable energy certificates and green PPAs
- Gas supply, transportation and storage agreements
- Legal onboarding including ISDA Master Agreement negotiation
- Derivatives transaction support
- Monitoring and adapting to Australian regulatory developments and regulatory compliance support
Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Develop and execute comprehensive legal strategies and solutions to facilitate the commercial objectives of the GEMS business in Australia and New Zealand generally - identifying and mitigating any transactional, regulatory and related risks and issues
- Work closely with front officers to contribute to business objectives through providing first class legal and regulatory advice relevant for the company’s business
- Exercise sound professional judgment in identifying issues that need reference to management and/or colleagues, legal experts within the business unit or the group
- Advise on legal and related issues as they arise in day-to-day trading/marketing activities, e.g. transaction support including legal onboarding, drafting, reviewing, advising on and negotiating bespoke, single trade and master agreements on various energy commodities and their derivatives (i.e. green PPAs, gas, carbon offset agreements, guarantees of origin, renewable energy certificates, verified emission reduction, commodity related financial derivatives), contracts with trading related market participants such as brokers and trading platforms
About you:
- Excellent stakeholder management skills
- Several years’ experience as a lawyer in Australia or other suitable common law jurisdiction with significant post qualification experience in a relevant domain.
- Substantial transactional experience with top-tier law firm, financial services provider and/or leading commodities firm
- Previous in-house legal experience (including secondments) is advantageous
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships, respecting the opinions of others
- Strong commercial acumen
