Mechanical Technician

Main Job Responsibilities include:

 

• Apply mechanical expertise to static and rotating mechanical assets to achieve the plant operational targets.

• As per company’s procedures and maintenance Lead Technician instructions ensure that all mechanical work are completed in due time and at a minimum cost.

• Execute assembly, repairs, replacements and adjustments for plant mechanical equipment and/or systems defined under the plant maintenance plan in accordance with requirements associated with production, availability, reliability and company’s procedures, standards, specifications and manufacturer’s recommendations.

• Participate in plant commissioning activities, attend training programme sessions and learn HSE policies and procedures.

• Review vendors’ documents, maintenance manuals and spare parts lists.

• Participate in drafting mechanical maintenance procedures necessary for plant operations and participate in SAP/MAXIMO development and implementation.

• Enforce HSE and Quality policies and procedures, and ensure that all HSE measures and precautions are strictly considered and taken care of during the execution of maintenance activities to avoid any activity which might lead to Environment Health and Safety incidents / non conformities.

• Take ownership of plant mechanical equipment and strive to reduce equipment downtime and ensure high plant availability at a minimum cost.

• Execute Mechanical day to-day maintenance activities according to SAP/MAXIMO notification and priority set up by Mechanical Lead Technician.

• Perform troubleshooting activities as necessary along with the Mechanical Lead Technician, Maintenance colleagues and Operations, to determine failure causes and rectify defects found.

•Ensure that Contractors have all needed resources and tools to conduct Mechanical maintenance activities effectively and that tasks they perform are properly recorded in SAP/MAXIMO.

•Assists Mechanical Lead Technician in preparing and scheduling daily jobs.

•Report to Mechanical Lead Technician all jobs carried out and record them properly in SAP/MAXIMO.

•Perform other related duties as assigned by Mechanical Lead Technician.

• He/ She must be capable of getting/maintaining authorization. 

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

• Grade 12

• National Diploma/ Degree/ NN6 in Mechanical Engineering.

• Trade test (prefarably Fitter)

 

Experience:

 

• At least 3 years’ experience in Mechanical maintenance of large power generation or continuous process plants.

• Hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of steam turbine or other major rotating equipment.

• Hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of hydraulic system.

• Hands-on experience in the maintenance of static equipment.

The Role:

Newly created opportunity for an experienced Commercial Manager to provide sound commercial advice to our Renewable and Flexible Generation teams.  The incumbent will execute the procurement, contract management and commercial strategy for the Renewable and Flexible Generation asset portfolio, including the negotiation, finalisation and ongoing administration and management of key contracts.

 

The role will be accountable to the Head of Commercial and can be worked flexibly between our Southbank office and home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that commercial terms and contract conditions are optimised and provide necessary protection to manage the Company’s risk across the Renewable and Flexible Generation Business Unit portfolios
  • Manage, in collaboration with the business development, development, delivery and operations teams, the administration of the portfolio of contracts across each asset, which includes leading the negotiation of standard terms and service level agreements with key suppliers and consultants and the resolution of contractual issues or disputes
  • Plan, coordinate and supervise key activities relating to the finalisation of major delivery contracts for the Renewable and Flexible Generation Business Unit assets, including working closely with the delivery team to lead the administration and management of those major delivery contracts.
  • Lead and coordinate the procurement of certain development, consulting, construction, operations and maintenance-related contracts and manage the tendering process, evaluation and selection of suppliers, and the contractual negotiations.
  • Develop and maintain key stakeholder relationships in respect of the local supply chain and provide contractual and commercial advice to the development, delivery and operations teams to deliver improvements in performance, cost, quality and safety of renewable energy, storage and hydrogen projects and other existing assets and collaborate with those teams with respect to the identification, management, negotiation and resolution of contractual issues.

 

 

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrable commercial acumen through end-to-end delivery of contract strategy development, contract negotiation and contract administration during project development, delivery and operation.  You will have sound knowledge of procurement and commercialisation principles and renewables industry best practices and experience in delivery contract formation such as EPC. 

 

You are collaborative in your approach and able to balance both internal and external stakeholders.  You possess exceptional communication skills and can manage complexity whilst driving results.

JOB PURPOSE

Environmental Permitting

  • Manage the EIA process from site selection to final approval to ensure compliance to relevant environmental standards
  • Management of EIA activities between consultants, landowners, governmental bodies, etc. to ensure the EIA process runs on time and within the prescribed budget
  • Renew and amend environmental authorizations to ensure permits remain valid and relevant to technological advancements
  • Prepare permit applications and agreements as needed by regulatory agencies to ensure projects follow local law

Bid Coordination: Environmental

  • Review bid documents to understand the requirement and deliverables of the tender.
  • Manage and appoint EAPs for bid submission and FC requirements. 
  • Develop a checklist based on environmental deliverables to track and delegate tasks and responsibilities through the team/consultants
  • Monitoring team deliverables to ensure all task are submitted on time to ensure the successful submission of the bid
  • Review and collate the various deliverables to ensure all bid requirements are provided.

Environmental Management of Construction and Operational projects

  • Assists with provision of Environmental input into EPC/ O&M Contractor’s contract to ensure that requirements are clearly stipulated
  • Maintain environmental permits and licenses to ensure project is operating within authorized limits and within ESMS
  • Investigate environmental accidents and propose corrective actions.
  • Manage the ECO during project construction phase to ensure compliance with environmental permits
  • Manage the LTA during financial close and construction on environmental related matters
  • Provide guidance and direction to onsite management to ensure environmental compliance and best practice measures are implemented
  • Prepare feedback reports and presentations to management.
  • Review and approve monthly ECO reports to ensure the report is accurate and reflective of site conditions.

Environmental Management of Construction and Operational projects

  • Review EPC contractor monthly reports to ensure activities and mitigations proposed are in line with environmental requirements
  • Monitor action taken by EPC contractor to resolve all open issues, take necessary contractual action if necessary.

Reporting

  • Collates, analyzes and summarizes environmental information and trends for relevant projects for reporting purposes.
  • Prepare Environmental information for Steerco and ESG Subcommittee meetings
  • Report on environmental performance across various platforms and to various stakeholders
  • Prepare board slides
  • Provide input into steerco meetings
  • Contribute to monthly progress reports to lenders.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Degree in Environmental Management.
  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH Certification.
  • ESMS Implementation and Auditing qualification at a recognized institution.

Experience And Skills:

  • 6-10 years working in the environmental, health and safety sector with a minimum of 3 years in the renewable energy sector where such experience has been obtained during the construction and operations phase.
  • Extensive knowledge of IFC Performance Standards, legislative requirements and the EIA process
  • Experience working with a multinational company would be desirable.

              Pre-development phase

  • Identify predevelopment opportunities and enable an early position for the group.
  • Produce, present and get approval of  Origination memo and Development memo by the AMEA RES Commitment Committee
  • Present and get approval of the Development memo by the RGBU Development Committee
  • Identify and propose partnerships.

 

               Development phase

  • Plan development and allocate internal & external resources.
  • Negotiate and manage partnerships.
  • Execute operational development activities like configuration analysis , Key vendor selection , EPC contractor selection.
  • Good understanding of tariff optimization techniques including yield optimization , capital cost opitmisation and cost of capital optimization
  • Build up project documentation (Origination memo, Development memo Investment memo )
  • Perform Risk analysis.
  • Perform internal project review together with support functions.
  • Present Investment memo to AMEA RES CC and RGBU CC for  approval.
  • Lead a multi-functional team leading to successful submission of  a proposal to the Client

 

               Final development phase

 

  • Sign off before commitment.
  • Lead Final development activities leading to execution of project agreements .
  • Lead the project team for financial Closing.
  • Produce compliance memo
  • Hand over  to Construction/Integration.
  • Organize and have BD meetings to perform project reviews.
  • Ensure timely and adequate reporting.
  • Organize and follow up ad-hoc audits.

 

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Be accountable for development of renewable opportunities from conceptualization to Financial close
  • Carry out proactive prospection and screen/evaluate opportunities.
  • Lead development activities with the support of a multifunctional team up to Financial close 
  • Negotiate to close a successful proposal submission in compliance with the investment criteria and risk mandate.
  • Contribute to define regional BD procedures, methods and documentation.
  • Support PAMT development plan (both CAPEX and development budget) and AMEA Renewables Business plan

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Degree

  • University Degree in Engineering, Finance or Economics;
  •  International MBA is a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years’ relevant working experience in the Energy sector;
  • More than 3 years of BD experience;
  • Experience in South Africa’s Private PPA programmes;
  • Good understanding of the typical bid requirements for the renewable energy industry;
  • Preference in experience in bringing projects to financial close with a specific focus on PPA negotiations and project finance exposure.

Language

  • Fluent in English, knowledge of other language(s) is a plus;

Specific Knowledge / skills

  • Detailed knowledge of energy markets in South Africa;
  • Renewable Power technologies including Solar , wind and Batteries;
  • Contract negotiation skills (EPC, PPA, SHA, Financing, …);
  • Knowledge of project finance mechanics and risk allocation.

Location / travel

  • Place of residence: Johannesburg, South Africa;
  • Frequent travel in South Africa and some travels internationally for Group seminars and meetings.

JOB PURPOSE

  • Development of utility scale Solar and On shore wind  projects in compliance with investment criteria and Business development procedures.
