Senior R&D Engineer (Electrical and Controls)

ENGIE Lab Singapore is the research centre of ENGIE for Asia-Pacific. ENGIE Lab Singapore brings the technical expertise of ENGIE Research in APAC by developing local expertise leveraging on ENGIE Research networks and allowing access in the region to all the technical expertise developed by ENGIE Research in Europe. Bridging the gap between ENGIE Research and business units ENGIE Lab Singapore play a key coordinator/local technical support role in balancing the R&D effort and the business needs for the Group.

 

Based in Singapore since 2015 ENGIE Lab Singapore primarily addressed 3 technological areas: Smart-Grid, Future Industries and Cities & New Gases.  In 2020 the Lab refocused its strategy to stay in line with group strategy and local context and strengthen its expertise in cooling, green data centres, and local energy communities including the REIDS-SPORE multifluid multi-thematic platform.

 

 

REPORTING LINE:

  • Research Program Manager

 

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

You will join the R&D team specifically responsible for supporting and executing various research projects/tasks related to electrical power and controls for various applications Among the R&D projects, the support on the continuous development of an energy management system, along with other electrical and control systems (inverter controller, PLCs, etc.) is critical. As a senior research engineer, you will be responsible for leading and executing various projects and tasks, both within ENGIE Group’s research portfolio, as well as innovative and commercial projects for the local business. The role will require the planning, design, and implementation of projects related to the integration of high- and low-level system controllers, and the concept design of low-voltage electrical systems which may require close collaboration with other disciplines within ENGIE Lab such as cooling and fuel You will also be responsible for guiding junior engineers and interns for respective projects under your purview, and for supporting the program managers on technical topics related to electrical engineering and controls for various energy systems and end-users such as data centres. As a senior research engineer you will also be responsible for supporting activities on our research and demonstration platform and pilot testing sites

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Propose, plan, and conduct research works concerning electrical and controls aligned with the direction of the group R&D objectives;
  • Support strongly on the continuous development of the energy management system within the group to be integrated with all peripheral control systems;
  • Support physically and technically the demonstrator projects locally in Singapore;
  • Guide and lead junior engineer(s) and interns to conduct research and commercial works, ensuring timely deliverables in good quality;
  • Guide and execute coding and integration projects with the support of junior team members;
  • Interact with European experts of different disciplines to support local research and other works;
  • Engage with partners to work on collaborative research as well as to develop further collaborations;
  • Support technically the engagement with local business entities within the group on their commercial projects;
  • Perform benchmark, technical & economic analysis and testing of innovative solutions;
  • Perform techno watch to identify innovations and new solutions/technologies;
  • Support Site Operational Manager in coordinating different parties for site related research activities (internal and external);
  • Report weekly to your manager.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Master’s Degree in Electrical and/or Controls Engineering;
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in an energy-related industry;     
  • Must understand and have a strong interest in research, development and innovation in the low carbon energy industry, with an emphasis smart grid, data centres, battery energy storage systems, grid demand response, multi-energy/utilities system
  • You have relevant engineering, data analytics, and/or programming skills needed to support research works;
  • You have a logical and algorithmic mindset, able to work on software development tasks;
  • You are able to handle works both in an agile project and a conventional waterfall industry project;
  • You have the problem-solving skills that outline a clear methodology towards objectives;
  • You have the leadership skills to lead junior engineers to generate high-quality deliverables;
  • You are able to work in a team as well as independently depending on the scope of different projects;
  • You are able to work in a multi-cultural team with respect and understanding;
  • You are proactive and resourceful;
  • You are fluent in English.
  • Additional background and experience in control theory and mathematical optimisation is a plus;
  • Working experience in the data centre. Integrated solutions, or power systems industry is a plus.

  • Able to handle multiple assignments without losing oversight in a timely manner.

Your responsibilities as Nuclear Chemistry Expert (F/M/X)

 

  • Lead Process Development: Drive operational support and process improvements for water chemistry at nuclear power stations.
     
  • Engage in Characterisation: Participate in radiological and physicochemical characterisation for decommissioning projects.
     
  • Conduct On-Site Activities: Perform on-site tasks at ENGIE power stations or other locations in Belgium.
     
  • Collaborate and Present: Work with multidisciplinary experts to solve complex problems and present findings to stakeholders.

Laborelec's Metallic Materials Team is specialized in solving metal-related issues encountered by nuclear, thermal and renewable power plants, and in development of metal expertise for new energy solutions. Our primary task is to boost power plant reliability by analyzing and preventing damage, determining the life span of critical components and analyzing failure cases in the field. This work is complemented with long-term research and innovation projects for evolving (renewable) energy businesses and technologies.

 

 

 

What you’ll be doing

 

Your responsibilities as Expert Metallic Materials and Welding (F/M/X)

 

  • Address welding, metal degradation, and ageing issues, gaining hands-on experience and enhancing technical knowledge.
  • Serve as a technical consultant and project engineer, handling complex metal-related problems, coordinating inspections, and presenting results.
  • Conduct failure and root cause analyses, providing recommendations to improve process quality, plant reliability, and lifespan.
  • Collaborate with various departments and customers globally, working in nuclear, conventional, and renewable energy plants worldwide, with opportunities for continuous learning and professional development.

Your responsibilities as a Power Transformer Expert. (F/M/X)

 

Within our department specialized in Electrical Equipment (EEQ), you have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies and make a significant impact on our customers' operations.

  • Engage in all aspects of the electricity value chain, from production to industry, and stay updated on new transformer technologies and market trends.
  • Collaborate with universities and research centers locally and abroad, and be open to travel for interventions on industrial sites in Belgium and Europe.
  • Draft specifications for transformers, evaluate supplier offers, conduct design reviews, and follow up on manufacturing and construction at supplier facilities.
  • Perform condition assessments, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, simulations, and material analysis for operating transformers
