ENGIE x L’Oréal – Brazil

How is ENGIE supporting L’Oréal in its transition to carbon neutrality?

By ENGIE - 07 January 2021 - 14:42

L’Oréal adopted an ambitious programme to reduce its environmental footprint, by sourcing 100% of its power supply from renewable energy sources. In Brazil, ENGIE supplies the cosmetics giant with turnkey solutions to step up its energy transition.

ENGIE’s solution for L’ORÉAL

In Brazil, ENGIE’s Trairi wind farm supplies L’Oréal’s production plants, distribution and research centres, and head office with 100% renewable electricity. This energy, produced from a wind farm 4,000 km from where it is used, prevents 7,000 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere every year.

Good to know

L’Oréal Brazil’s goal was to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2020, compared with 2005 levels. By 2018 they had beaten this target with a 68% reduction in their emissions!

ENGIE’s solution for L’Oréal

L´Oréal and ENGIE have partnered for the use of electricity from renewable sources in all L´Oréal sites in Brazil. Wind power is generated at ENGIE’s Wind Complex in the municipality of Trairi (Ceará), and it supplies the manufacturing plants, Distribution Centers, Research Center and headquarters of L´Oréal Brazil, avoiding the emission of 7,000 tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The Trairi Complex, developed by ENGIE, is a leading wind energy project that contributes to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Clean Energy, but it also contributes to the area of health and education of vulnerable students of municipalities whose initiatives are aligned with ENGIE’s purpose of offering solutions that combine energy and socio-environmental attributes. Acquiring ENGIE’s renewable energy reinforces L’Oréal Brazil’s commitment to sustainability and helps the company reach its goal of zeroing CO2 impacts related to energy consumption at its operated sites.

“The issue of climate change is one of our priorities in sustainability. The decision to focus on acquiring 100% renewable energy produced in the Trairi wind farm aims to reduce the environmental impact resulting from our activities”, says the CEO of L´Oréal Brasil.

Beyond the partnership in Brazil, ENGIE contributes to L’Oréal carbon neutrality achievements on all continents by providing both renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions.

Part of their new sustainability program “L’Oréal for the Future” goals, All of L’Oréal sites will have achieved carbon neutrality by 2025 by improving energy efficiency and using 100% renewable energy. By 2030, L’Oréal strategic suppliers will reduce their direct emissions by 50% in absolute terms, compared to 2016.
