Our commitments to the environment and society
For more than ten years, the Group has been committed to a trajectory aligned with the Paris Agreement to advance the energy transition. Today, ENGIE aims to become the leading utility of the energy transition, making environmental and societal impact a lever for transformation in support of an ambitious Net Zero Carbon trajectory, consistent with its purpose.
Our Net Zero Carbon Trajectory: a roadmap to 2045
Since 2017, ENGIE has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40%. In 2025, with the update of our climate strategy, we strengthened our medium- and long-term ambitions. Our carbon neutrality target for 2045 has been confirmed across all scopes (1, 2 and 3), implying a reduction of at least 90% of emissions compared with 2017 and the neutralization of residual emissions.
We have also raised all our intermediate decarbonization targets and defined new milestones for 2035 and 2040. By 2030, we now aim to reduce our total emissions by 55%, reaching a level between 120 and 140 MtCO₂e.
ENGIE’s various targets outline a trajectory compatible with the Paris Agreement, as confirmed by assessments from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the Transition Pathway Initiative, and Moody’s.
in four countries, including Brazil, by 2030
greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared with 2017
CO₂e total emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) by 2030
CO₂e annual emissions avoided for our clients by 2030
Since 2025, these targets have been complemented by intermediate milestones for 2035 and 2040, strengthening the credibility of our decarbonization trajectory.
An action plan aligned with our ambition
To achieve its climate mitigation objectives – both by reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions and by supporting clients in their decarbonization efforts – ENGIE is implementing a structured action plan built around several key levers:
- reducing greenhouse gas emissions by increasing renewable energy production, phasing out coal by 2027, developing storage solutions and accelerating the deployment of biomethane and renewable hydrogen
- supporting our clients in their decarbonization efforts through the supply of low-carbon products and services
- offsetting residual emissions through the development of carbon sinks and the use of high-quality carbon credits for emissions that cannot be reduced
In addition to our climate mitigation actions, we have launched adaptation initiatives to anticipate the impacts of climate change on our activities, assets and the health and safety of our teams. These analyses enable the implementation of targeted action plans to strengthen the resilience of infrastructure, employees and the entire value chain in the face of increasingly frequent extreme climate events.

Preserving nature and managing our impacts
The preservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources are central to our environmental commitments. We are implementing a clear and ambitious Nature strategy aimed at managing our impacts and integrating biodiversity considerations into all our projects.
This strategy is based in particular on an approach designed to avoid, reduce and, where necessary, offset our impacts on ecosystems, as well as on our participation in international initiatives such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN).
Three main objectives by 2030:
of industrial sites and activities covered by an environmental plan developed in consultation with stakeholders
cubic meter of water consumed per megawatt-hour produced
of industrial activities committed to ecological site management, notably without chemical phytosanitary products

Building a responsible social framework
From a societal perspective, ENGIE places dialogue with its stakeholders at the heart of the way it conducts its projects and ensures the sustainability of its activities, in order to create lasting and shared value. Our engagement approach is based on a structured framework integrating respect for local communities, indigenous peoples, working and remuneration conditions, and more broadly fundamental human rights. This culture of listening and dialogue is also reflected in societal and environmental partnerships, both in France and internationally. Our ambition is for 100% of our industrial activities – including projects and decommissioning sites – to be covered by a stakeholder engagement plan by 2030.
Convinced that the transition to a carbon-neutral economy must be fair, ENGIE works to minimize negative social impacts while maximizing its benefits. Our Just Transition plan aims to:
- protect and support employees from a social perspective
- sustainably develop and preserve territories through projects whose positive impacts strengthen their resilience
- ensure that customers, particularly low-income customers, can access affordable and sustainable energy through innovative offers
- develop an inclusive procurement policy benefiting the most responsible suppliers

Our strong commitment to green finance
We are a leading player in green finance. As a pioneer, ENGIE issued one of its first green bonds in 2014 and has since ranked among the top three corporate issuers. Green finance instruments support ENGIE’s ambitious investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
