Drogenbos Power Plant (Belgium)

Context: Difficult market conditions for CCGT in Belgium, strong need for transition to cycling regime and even dry running mode.

EMS solution: Assessment of key factors for cycling regime, resulting in an overview of associated risks and possible mitigation measures. In a second phase: an assessment allowing the CCGT to be safely operated in dry running mode and without jeopardising potential switchback to CCGT mode.

Beneffits: Plant management was able to give a future to an existing plant in a challenging market environment. After a few years, due to more favourable market conditions, the plant will now be restored to CCGT mode.

Generator and high-voltage protection relay services

Your key concerns:

Spurious or incorrect operation of protection relays can damage assets, create unsafe situations and result in unreliable functioning of the electricity network. Although protection relays are small and not very visible in electrical installations, they are critical assets whose failure usually results in a loss of production or downtime of the production facility.

Both Doel 1 and 2 units came on stream in 1975, so their HV motors have been in operation for more than 40 years

Our measurement team assessed all 45 non-nuclear safety-related motors and drew up a detailed report enabling qualitative comparisons between them. That report prompted the decision to refurbish 16 motors. Five will undergo annual re-measurement, the remainder will be re-measured every 5 years.

Managing a powertrain outage or any of the powertrain equipment (generator, steam turbine, gas turbine) from the early stages of preparation to execution and subsequently validation is a highly complex process. Identifying the appropriate scope and spare parts needed, making clarifications with OEMs or other turnkey contractors, drafting a quality plan with hold and witness points, following up on activities and properly addressing non-conformities are all pieces of a complex puzzle that significantly affect the total budget and the duration and quality of the outage.
