COP27: ENGIE at Sharm El-Cheikh

Event

Published on 07 Nov. 2022

For the first time in less than 10 years, The Conference of the Parties will take place in an African country: in Egypt, in Sharm el-Sheikh, from November 7 to 18, 2022.

Considered as the COP of the “last chance”, it “will have to be the one of implementation, to move from promises to actions”, warned Ambassador Wael Aboul Magd, special representative of the Egyptian Presidency of the COP.

Objective given by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres: “to deposit a “down payment” on climate solutions that respond to the magnitude of the problem” and “plan the implementation” of all the promises of 2021.

Last year’s COP26, held in Glasgow, called on states to raise their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) each year. But only 24 countries submitted new or enhanced NDCs.

COP27 is expecting nearly 100 leaders from around the world.

On the agenda this year:

  • Mitigation of climate change: how are countries reducing their emissions?
  • Adaptation or how are countries going to adapt to the consequences of global warming
  • Financing “loss and damage” so that countries on the front lines of the crisis can cope with the consequences of climate change and the realization of the $100 billion pledge from developed countries to low-income countries to help finance their adaptation
  • The Just Transition
