Innovation is an essential driver of the transition toward a decarbonized, high-performing, and resilient energy system. ENGIE leverages its full range of research, technology, and entrepreneurial capabilities to design and deploy the solutions that will shape the energy systems of tomorrow.

ENGIE’s research and innovation activities focus on developing renewable electricity and renewable gases such as biogas and renewable hydrogen.

Our work also covers the energy efficiency of buildings, cities, and industrial sites, as well as the flexibility of energy systems through storage and smart grids.

ENGIE harnesses digital technologies, data, and artificial intelligence to operate infrastructure more efficiently, improve reliability, and accelerate the transition from innovation to industrial-scale deployment.

In Vilvoorde, Belgium, ENGIE operates one of Europe’s largest battery energy storage facilities, fully managed by in-house algorithms. These algorithms make nearly 8,000 decisions every day to optimize the facility’s performance. Thanks to artificial intelligence and data, batteries are no longer just storage assets: they enable real-time energy management, better integration of renewable energy, and greater grid stability.

Our innovation ecosystem is powered by more than 530 researchers across three R&D centers, a network of over 5,000 startup partners, and dedicated open innovation programs.

By integrating climate considerations into both its investment decisions and research projects, ENGIE pursues a clear ambition: achieving Net Zero Carbon across all Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2045.

Strengthening climate resilience

The energy transition is not only about reducing emissions. It also requires adapting infrastructure and communities to the already visible impacts of climate change. ENGIE incorporates these challenges from the earliest stages of project design to anticipate climate risks, strengthen the resilience of energy infrastructure, and help both communities and businesses adapt. For example, in Texas, solar panels have been reinforced and equipped with a tilting system that allows them to lie flat during severe weather warnings, improving their resistance to storms and hail.

Improving energy performance

The cleanest energy is the energy we don’t use. ENGIE develops digital solutions, smart grids, and new services to help customers better manage their energy consumption.

Our goal is to optimize energy use, reduce costs, and improve the efficiency of buildings, cities, and industrial sites.

For example, ENGIE is supporting Airbus in the decarbonization of 22 industrial sites across Europe, with the objective of reducing energy purchases by 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by 85% at its facilities in France, Germany, and Spain by 2030. This is made possible in part through intelligent energy management combined with advanced sensors. The system collects real-time data (including electricity and thermal consumption, building occupancy, weather conditions, and solar generation), and automatically adjusts equipment to reduce energy use while maintaining comfort, safety, and industrial performance. Energy management can also be based on predictive data, such as weather forecasts, occupancy levels, consumption profiles, and energy prices, enabling the system to anticipate demand and optimize site performance.

Investing in breakthrough technologies

Through its ENGIE New Ventures fund, with €180 million under management, ENGIE invests in startups with strong technological and business potential. The objective is to support the emergence of technologies capable of transforming energy and industrial systems for the long term.

Since 2014, ENGIE New Ventures has invested in around 60 startups.
