EXCERPT – Heaps of biodiversity
Long regarded as the scars of a bygone industry, the slag heaps of northern France’s mining basin have become real havens for biodiversity. Their poor, warm and dry soil is home to a surprising diversity of species, some of which are under threat in their natural habitats. The association Chaîne des Terrils works to preserve, study and promote these unique habitats, which are home to over 300 plant species and 550 animal species.
