ENGIE in Australia: renewable energy, storage and the energy transition
Present in Australia since 1996, ENGIE develops and operates energy solutions across five states: Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland. Its activities span renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), dispatchable power generation, renewable hydrogen, and energy supply and management. ENGIE is supporting Australia’s transition toward a cleaner, more reliable and increasingly decarbonized energy system.

Expanding renewable energy and storage
ENGIE is expanding its Australian power generation portfolio with more than 6,000 MW of large-scale wind, solar and battery storage projects currently in development.
Notably, ENGIE’s current and proposed wind farms could generate enough renewable electricity to power up to 1.2 million average Australian homes.

Flagship projects at the heart of our net-zero strategy
Hazelwood BESS: transforming a former coal-fired power plant into a battery energy storage system
We redeveloped the Hazelwood site, the first coal-fired power plant to close in Australia, into a 150 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Commissioned in 2023, the facility can store one hour of rooftop solar generation from 30,000 homes.
This project illustrates our ability to transform a former coal-fired power generation site into infrastructure that supports the energy transition and the integration of renewable energy into Australia’s power system.
Goorambat East: Victoria’s largest solar farm
In August 2026, we commissioned the 250 MW Goorambat East Solar Farm, our first large-scale solar development in Australia and currently Victoria’s largest operating solar farm. The project will generate enough clean electricity to power around 105,000 homes annually, with part of its output secured through a 10-year PPA with Microsoft.
More than 250 jobs were created during construction, while ENGIE will contribute $75,000 annually to a community benefit fund throughout the project’s lifetime.
Pelican Point: battery storage and flexible power Generation
In South Australia, we are building a 200 MW / 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at our 489 MW Pelican Point power station. Once operational, the battery will be able to store surplus electricity generated during periods of high renewable output and feed it back into the grid when demand increases.
Scheduled to be commissioned in the second half of 2027, the battery will be able to store and dispatch enough energy to power more than 29,400 South Australian homes.
Yuri: renewable hydrogen production
The Yuri renewable hydrogen facility in Western Australia is being developed by ENGIE and Mitsui to supply renewable hydrogen to Yara’s ammonia production plant in Karratha.
The first phase includes a 10 MW electrolyzer powered by 18 MW of solar capacity and supported by an 8 MW battery. It is designed to produce up to 640 metric tons of renewable hydrogen per year.
Scheduled for completion in 2027, the project is supported by the Australian government’s ARENA Renewable Hydrogen Deployment Fund and the Western Australian government’s Renewable Hydrogen Fund.
Providing more sustainable energy to households and businesses
Alongside its power generation activities, ENGIE is also a major energy retailer in Australia. ENGIE Australia, formerly Simply Energy, supplies electricity and gas to more than 650,000 households and businesses across five states. The company also offers solutions for electric mobility, solar power and battery storage.
ENGIE also provides tailored energy solutions to businesses such as Microsoft and the Australian Hotels Association, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), helping them achieve their decarbonization goals and gain access to renewable energy.
Supporting Australia’s energy transition
ENGIE’s activities in Australia are part of the Group’s global ambition to achieve net-zero carbon by 2045 across around 30 countries. Looking ahead, we will continue to support Australia’s energy transition through new renewable energy and hydrogen projects, building on our shift away from coal-fired generation.
