Context:

In the Short-term Power as-a-Service (SPaaS) business platform of GEMS we are a diverse group of experts with a variety of ages, genders and languages dedicated to delivering high quality services and value to our clients on the short-term power markets through strong business expertise and digital experience. Within SPaaS, the Market Overisight & Strategies team (MOS) supports a range of internal teams and external clients involved in these short-term markets across Central Western Europe (CWE).  We are currently looking for a senior MOS expert in Brussels to strenghten our team.

Role:

The role of the MOS expert is structured around two sets of activities:

  1. Non-operational activities (“offline”): you will steer the development of models and algorithms to optimize our portfolio of assets and trade on customer positions across the different markets, horizons and technologies in the short-term scope.
  1. Operational activities (“online"): on a daily basis, jointly with a short-term trader and an asset optimizer and supported by market analysts and meteorologists you will develop optimization/trading strategies for the short-term power markets based on a profound risk analysis of all fundamentals. These will be shared with the shifters as guidelines for their bidding strategies.

For the offline activities described above, you will help coordinate a group of market analysts,  quants, data experts and software developers to code and maintain the toolset from which all short-term market strategies are derived (including new optimization models and algorithms leveraging machine-learning technologies). Here, the teams are driven by the common goal of making better and faster trading decisions, always pushing the strategies and analyses into new territory.

In turn, the online activities to be performed by the MOS expert include concretely the following:

  • Lead the intramonth optimization activity for the assets in the CWE portfolio as the starting point for the market strategies in the following (sequential) markets (day-ahead, intraday). This includes outage valorizations and week-ahead planning.
  • Evaluate on a continuous basis the value of the assets across all short-term markets and provide insights to the short-term optimizers on an overall strategy.
  • Provide quantitative guidance to short-term optimizers on the commodity price references available, including adjustments on power price forecasts based on latest market trends.
  • Evaluate premiums to be applied on the pricing of the assets in any short-term market to account for opportunity costs from the other (sequential) markets.
  • Devise performance KPIs for the complete short-term horizon that enable back-testing and adjusting the strategies; and reporting on the results (per asset).

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in engineering or any other quantitative discipline (economics, computer science, finance, etc.)
  • You have at least 5 years of professional experience – including ideally from two previous roles in GEMS.
  • Willingness to take part in a rotating, on-duty shift system from Monday to Friday during office hours (online activities described above)
  • Sound analytical skills, attention to detail and a structured approach cultivated from experience in quantitative and/or trading-related functions. Your ability to collect information, to examine it methodically and extract the most relevant conclusions for each optimization scenario will be very appreciated.
  • Thorough understanding of  the economics and the functioning of short-term energy markets including power, gas and emissions; power systems dispatch and flow dynamics. You have a good grasp of the fundamental drivers and the exposure to risk faced by GEMS clients in all these markets.
  • A team player with strong communication skills: join a team where your ability to coordinate colleagues from other backgrounds to deliver concrete guidance on market strategies comes naturally to you and helps ensure a high standard of operational performance. You are able to explain complex issues and present them in a clear and concise manner.
  • Your disposition to take the initiative and bring new ideas to the table will be highly valued.
  • You bring an instinct to take sensible and calculated risks.
  • Knowledge of accounting mechanisms (both industrial and trading), market finance of the power business (hedging, derivatives) and associated trading strategies is an asset.
  • Coding skills in languages like Python and VBA are a strong plus, but we are also open to consider candidates with a willingness to learn and grow. We offer a supportive environment where you can enhance all your skills.

Languages:

Fluency in English (oral and written) – knowledge of French, Dutch and/or other languages is an advantage.

What we offer:

  • A window to short-term energy markets in Central-Western Europe.
  • The opportunity to steer the optimization of power plant portfolios with predominant positions across Europe, and that include state-of-the-art thermal and hydro pump storage assets.
  • A position to liaise and cooperate with forward and intraday traders, risk officers, forecasters, power dispatchers and plant managers, middle- and back-office counterparts for a complete portfolio optimization experience.
  • The means to develop coding skills in languages commonly in use in front operations and other relevant IT skills.
  • Engagement with a stimulating role that embraces constant evolution. Challenges arise daily, offering opportunities for creative problem-solving and intellectual growth.
  • Flexible work arrangements aimed at facilitating a healthy work/life balance, including allowances to work from home and abroad.
  • Autonomy: the oppthe opportunity to take responsibilities, to shape the activities and make a lasting contribution to the platform.
  • The possibility to grow professionally in one of the leading players of the European energy sector.
  • A positive and collaborative work culture, where every voice is valued.
  • The opportunity to join a diverse group of experts with a variety of ages, genders and languages focused on delivering value to all our clients on the short-term energy markets through a sound digital experience.
