Power Congestion Analyst II

What You Can Expect

As a Power Congestion Analyst II, you will report to the Director of Congestion Trading and provide quantitative and fundamental analytics for US electricity markets to improve grid modeling and congestion analysis. Every day, you will perform cost modeling by using DAYZER to forecast nodal electricity price components and analyze weather patterns and fuel prices to predict the base electricity prices.

 

  • Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and Pennsylvania New Jersey Maryland Interconnection (PJM) Independent System Operator (ISO) congestion analysis
  • Execute production cost models (Dayzer preferred) by systematically analyzing and updating the inputs as appropriate
  • Develop and execute appropriate scenario studies pertinent to the period of study and systematically analyzing the results
  • Develop systematic and repeatable approach to form fundamental views with respect to congestion trading
  • Analyze and determine drivers of Day Ahead and Real Time congestion market outcomes based on macro-fundamentals (supply, demand, renewables) and micro-fundamentals (specific transmission and generation outage impacts, bids, facility limits).
  • Develop and test innovative trade ideas and strategies
  • Identify model gaps by calibrating the model results to market outcomes and determine appropriate solutions
  • Assist with ad-hoc fundamental analyses
  • Participate in ISO meetings as appropriate and assess commercial impacts
  • Collaborate with IT personnel to maintain and improve trade tools
  • Develop and maintain dispatch and flow models, communicating fundamental developments and views to stakeholders
  • Build models to track market fundamentals and regularly benchmark against actualizations

 

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in which you completed courses in Engineering/Business/Finance or relevant disciplines
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in congestion markets analysis, power plant economics, price forecasting, trading, or a related discipline
  • Six (6) months of experience with production cost modeling, congestion analysis or wholesale electricity market experience in the relevant ISO
  • Experience in ERCOT or PJM ISO congestion market
  • Strong understanding of power grid optimization, powerflow shift factors, line-outage distribution factors and contingency analysis
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Willingness to engage in dialogue and debate with colleagues
  • Proficient in coding such as Structured Query Language (SQL)/ Python
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy

 

 

 

Additional Details

  • This role is eligible for our hybrid work policy, 4 days working in the office Monday through Thursday

Compensation

Salary Range: $74,900 – $131,040 USD annually

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

Integrating the quantitative analyst team is a huge opportunity for you to work on financial modeling and IT development:

  • Financial modeling: Stochastic pricing models, XVA, VaR, SVaR, CVaR,…

PRICING MODEL VALIDATION

 

  • Be in direct contact with traders, and pricing model designers to understand derivatives, and stochastic pricing models ;
  • Challenge theoretical model design and measuring model risk ;
  • Develop in C# validated stochastic models ;
  • Develop in C# alternative stochastic models.

 

MARKET AND CREDIT RISK MODEL DESIGN

 

  • XVA, VaR, SVaR, and CVaR, model designer ;

  • Interact with risk team and trading team, to understand the problem, and propose some theoretical and technical solutions ;
  • Develop and test model in python ;
  • Work with IT team for risk engine implementation ;
  • Develop “ad hoc” pricing tools and prototypes used by the FO, leveraging on the pricing library and potentially developing customized tools.

 

MODEL ONGOING MONITORING

 

In a big data environment (python + Amazon web service), ensure model quality over the time ;

  • Challenge exotic parameter of pricing model ;
  • Design, implement, and automatize pricing model quality metrics ;
  • Calibrate stochastic model risk under historical probability.

 

HARD SKILLS 

  • Knowledge of stochastic models applied to derivative pricing and risk modeling ;
  • Knowledge of statistic (hypothesis testing, time series, regression analysis) ;
  • Good object-oriented programming skills (C#, Python) in order to develop autonomously prototypes & models ;
  • Knowledge of Amazon web service or other Big data environment would be appreciated ;
  • Some experience in Commodity Markets would be appreciated.

EDUCATION / SENIORITY

Power Grid Modeling and Forecasting Advisor

What You Can Expect

As a Power Grid Modeling and Forecasting Advisor, you will report to Congestion Trading Director and will develop long term grid scenarios for the California Independent System Operator (CAISO)/Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) footprint and forecast nodal price curves using production cost modeling tools.

 

  • Develop and execute appropriate scenario studies pertinent to the period of study and systematically analyzing the results
  • Execute production cost models - Day-Ahead Locational Market Clearing Prices Analyzer (Dayzer) by systematically analyzing and updating the inputs as appropriate
  • Develop systematic and repeatable approach to analyze and form fundamental views with respect to macro-trends
  • Analyze and determine drivers of Day Ahead and Real Time congestion market outcomes based on macro-fundamentals (supply, demand, renewables) and micro-fundamentals (specific transmission and generation outage impacts, bids, facility limits)
  • Identify model gaps by calibrating the model results to market outcomes and determine appropriate solutions
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to the enhance fundamental trading
  • Participate in Independent System Operator (ISO) meetings as appropriate and assess commercial impacts
  • Collaborate with IT personnel to maintain and improve relevant tools
  • Develop and maintain dispatch and flow models, communicating fundamental developments and views to stakeholders
  • Build models to track market fundamentals and regularly benchmark against actualizations

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Master’s degree in which you completed courses in relevant disciplines (Engineering/Business/Finance etc.)
  • A minimum of seven years professional experience
  • A minimum of five years of grid planning or wholesale electricity market experience in CAISO/WECC or relevant ISO
  • Strong understanding of power grid optimization, powerflow shift factors, line-outage distribution factors and contingency analysis
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Clear and effective communicator
  • Willingness to engage in dialogue and debate with colleagues
  • Proficient in coding such as Structured Query Language (SQL) and Python
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques

Compensation

Salary Range: $112,000 – $172,500 USD annually

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
